Deborah is a full time model of 15 years currently living in London. She has undertaken a vast array of assignments worldwide and has experienced and adapted to many changes in the modelling industry. Deborah tells us more about her experiences and offers advice for aspiring models...
Who are your modelling icons and inspiration?
Audrey Hepburn for her sense of style, elegance, grace, I just loved
her accent! For a thin woman she was just as sexy as Marilyn Monroe but in
her own way. Kate Moss also for her simplicity and power and Tyra Banks for being a downtown home girl and giving so much to others and her ability to work and manipulate the camera
How did you start modelling?
I started out training at Barbizon modelling school in Charleston,
South Carolina. I didn't get much work but still gained what knowledge was
available which has been the foundation to who I am today
Did you have any rejections early on your career? If so, how did you deal with it?
Absolutely! From a major agency in New York to almost every single
casting I've ever been on! That's the name of the game though. I suppose I
have always been positive enough to take it and turn it into humour. That is
why I believe I have lasted as long as I have, I've seen the industry change
over the years via technology and am very pleased to have had the
flexibility to move with the times!! Back in the day there was no room
for mistakes and processing costs were very expensive not to mention time!
I, like
everyone, doubted myself on so many occasions but you have to take the
rejection on the chin and keep on truckin'!
Preparation, Persistence, Patience, and Practice makes perfect!
What do you enjoy most and least (if anything) about modelling?
I LOVE the pace. When you're not busy your life is yours, when it comes to
work... Jump to it girl! You're on!
I also love the unpredictability of the industry. You never know who you're
going to be working with, where you're going to be, or what you're going to be
asked to do! It's exciting! So varied!
Approximately how many hours do you work in a typical week?
A difficult question because of the variety of work or
lack of. Sometimes I'll have several jobs a week which can vary
depending on who it's for, how far I have to travel, thrown in with loads of
castings and commuting.
Other weeks, sometimes months, I have very little work so the hours are
greatly reduced! Feast or Famine, unless you have another job, every model will tell you the same
